The region I am from contains one of the largest sources of oil and gas in the world yet its people receive little of this wealth. The land that has over millions of years produced these riches receives little respect and is poorly treated. It became the focus of one of the most tragic and longest wars in modern history with over a million dead and has yet to witness any rebuilding and redevelopment. It is also a deeply traditional and religious society. These are some of the issues I try to examine and relay in my work: the history of the region’s oil industry and the effects of this industry on the environment in H2S, its allure to foreign aggressors in Past Continuous, the results of war on the local population and their displacement in Khorramshahr in Number by Number, and my experiences during the two years of mandatory military service in Sir Yes Sir.
