Samira's Journey

More of Samira's Story →

As a toddler, her mother attempted to kill her with opium to rid her of 'this miserable life'.

Samira took all of Omid-e-Mehr's scheduled classes in art, English, social skills and computer skills.

Samira has become one of the most self-confident and mature girls in the center, and an inspiration for the new candidates.

Behnaz's Journey

More of Behnaz's Story →

Behnaz came to the center when she was 17. She was using strong tranquilizers, and was regularly self-harming.

Her family had gone bankrupt and moved into a room above their grandmother's house.

Behnaz used to be such an angry and defensive girl, but she is thriving here and has proven to have many talents to offer.

Farzaneh was raped by her brother-in-law while lying unconscious. She became pregnant and her baby was taken away.

Farzaneh is having regular counseling to help her come to terms with the past and now regularly sees her son.

We have a solution

The Omid-e-Mehr center is a safe haven where young women with troubled pasts can take refuge. Here we build self-esteem and develop vocational skills to ensure bright futures.

However, we have to turn away hundreds of women every year, so we need your help to open a new center.

With regular donations from around the world we hope to be able to help hundreds more women in a second Omid-e-Mehr center.

Our scheduled program

  • Young women aged 15-25 are either referred here or come to the center directly. We ensure they have a safe place to stay and assess their immediate psychological needs.
  • The girls embark on a therapy program which helps them accept the past, build confidence and develop social skills. Meanwhile, classes begin in computer science, English, personal hygiene and visual arts.
  • We build on the progress made in year one, helping to turn the often frightened, defensive girls into confident, happy women. We facilitate and mediate family reconcilations where appropriate.
  • Group therapy sessions continue. The young women are encouraged to think about their careers plans and life goals with vocational training courses.
  • Now ready to re-enter society, we help the girls find suitable work and accomodation. Some go into accounting, others become graphic designers, teachers, dressmakers and artists. Others sit for the university entrance exams and continue their studies at university. Inspired by their own experience, some graduates have emigrated and are pursuing their careers or higher level studies in Europe or North America.

Our center

Our Centres

At any one time, our center in Tehran is a place of sanctuary, renewal and hope for up to 150 young women, but we can do more. In 2012 we hope to open another center. We have already raised an amazing $290,000 but we still need a further $190,000 to make this possible, but if just 633 of our supporters can give just $25 a month, we'll reach hundreds more vulnerable young women in Iran.
