Peyman Heydarian
Peyman Heydarian is an award-winning music scientist and santur virtuoso. He has adopted innovative tuning systems and performance
techniques in order to play a multi-ethnic repertoire on the instrument. He started music at the age of four, and learned Persian
music under the supervision of music virtuosos, including Mojtaba Mirzadeh and Pashang Kamkar. His main instrument is the santur,
and he has developed his own performance style on the instrument. He began teaching music at the age of eight. He has lectured on
santur performance at the Faculty of Arts, Tarbiat Modarres University in Tehran, lectured on music technology at London Metropolitan
University, taught santur at City University and teaches santur and Persian music at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).
He completed his MSc in Electrical Engineering on "Music Note Recognition for Santur", during which, he developed a computer algorithm
for automatic transcription of music. He continued his research in music processing at the Centre for Digital Music, Queen Mary,
University of London and was awarded an MPhil in July 2008. He was highly commended at the SSMS 2007 contest at Glasgow University for
his algorithm on Analysis and Classification of Persian Musical Modes. He is currently undertaking research on pushing the boundaries
of the Persian music and the santur performance.
Vicky Anastasiou
Vicky is a vocalist. She fulfilled her Masters in Music Performance at the London College of Music. She performs in a mixture of styles
and in different projects including a jazz band, a funk-rock band and the SOAS Rebetiko band. She composes her own music which is the
amalgam of the different music styles that she is involved in and has been trained in. She has performed in Cyprus and the UK, where
she is currently based, in various festivals and venues including the Shepherds Bush Empire and the Cobden Club in London, the World
Music Day festivals in Cyprus, etc.
Vassilis Chatzimakris
Vassilis started his music studies in guitar, Byzantine music and ud. He did his BA in Composition in the Department of Music Studies of
the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He is currently an MA student in Performance Design and Practice course of Central Saint
Martins College, University of the Arts, London. He is an active cretan lyra player, performer and improviser. He is co-founder and
member of the improvisation and performance ensemble "6daEXIt" and the Cretan music group "Lavris".
Noonie Minogue
Noonie is classically trained in piano, guitar and cello. She has played in SOAS Rebetiko and Iranian bands as well as with a classical
and jazz flute quartet for which she makes musical arrangements.
Cassandre Balosso-Bardin
Cassandre is a recorder and bagpipe player. She studied the recorder and the cello at the Ecole Nationale de Musique de La Vallée de Chevreuse,
where she obtained a performers degree. She is also a bagpipe player and plays the gaita gallega from Galicia, Spain, and the French
cornemuse from central France. She is currently studying towards a PhD degree in Ethnomusicology at SOAS, focusing on the Majorcan
bagpipes, the xeremies.
Emad Rajabalipour
Emad plays the daff, and took lessons in percussion and group performance with Peyman Heydarian. He has been performing in a multicultural
environment since 2005. He has played in various locations such as universities, churches, museums and national events for the BBC. He has
been engaged in academic performances with SOAS Rebetiko and Iranian bands since 2005.
